Toy Story Midway Mania! is a fun, interactive, 4-D theme park attraction. It is also marketed under the name Toy Story Mania. This ride is currently located at three different Disney parks. Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort, and Tokyo Disney Sea at Tokyo Disney Resort.
The story line behind Toy Story Mania is that Andy gets a new carnival play set for his birthday. Once he heads down stairs for dinner, his toys come to life and assemble the carnival games.
The concept of Toy Story Midway Mania is guests wearing 3D glasses (Carnival Games Goggles) aboard spinning vehicles that travel through virtual environments based on classic carnival midway games. Ride vehicles seat up to eight in four back-to-back pairs. Small children are also able to ride on an adult’s lap if they are facing forward with their legs securely underneath the safety bar.
This fun attraction features five mini-games after a practice round. Each round includes at least one “Easter egg” that can trigger additional targets or gameplay changes. These games include: Pie Throw Practice Booth (pie toss target practice game, a no points introduction), Hamm & Eggs (egg throw gam) Rex and Trixie’s Dino Darts (dart throw game to shoot balloons), Green Army Men Shoot Camp (baseball throw / plate breaking game), Buzz Lightyear’s Flying Tossers (ring toss game), and Woody’s Rootin’ Tootin’ Shootin’ Gallery (suction cup shooting game).
Each guest’s score is recorded by an onboard display screen as points are acquired with individual toy cannons firing simulated projectiles at virtual targets. Toy Story characters including Woody, Hamm, Buzz Lightyear, Rex, and Trixie featured in the different games.
Toy Story Midway Mania is by far my most favorite attraction at Walt Disney World. I think that this has something to do with the fact that it is so interactive. I actually didn’t go to Hollywood Studios for almost 20 years so last year when I discovered Toy Story Mania I couldn’t get enough. Much to my surprise I have even been able to beat my gamer husband TWICE! The competitive nature of this game, along with characters we all know and love makes Toy Story a must do attraction for all ages. This is one of the attractions I make a point to visit each time I am at Walt Disney World whether I can get a FastPass + or not.
I have to ride this ride multiple times when I visit and I will happily ride stand-by, alone or with a stranger. I love Toy Story, so naturally this ride quickly became a favorite. There is so much going on during the game that one trip just isn’t enough to see it all. I enjoy the carnival game aspect of this ride so much that I bought the Wii game so I can play at home – and I love that I beat my husband every time.
- Be sure to get a FastPass+ for this attraction to avoid longer wait times during the busy season.
- If you are trying to maximize your score, ride in the car solo.
- Practice at home on your favorite console with the at home version of Toy Story Mania.
- Aim for accuracy. The more you shoot and miss the more you slow down your chances to score points.
- Look for moving targets for higher point values
